Since 1996, 34 states and the District of Columbia have passed laws authorizing their citizens to legally use medical cannabis. In 2004, the United States Supreme Court upheld earlier federal court decisions that doctors have a fundamental Constitutional right to recommend cannabis to their patients. Doctors do not need to be in a state with medical cannabis laws to recommend cannabis to their patient.

“I don’t think physicians have a bias against marijuana,” said Robert Brockmann, president of the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians. “I think there is a bias against lack of information.” Brockmann said (The Denver Post, March 12, 2013).

However, if you are in state with medical cannabis laws, each state requires different mechanisms to put recommendations in writing so that the patient may legally access the medication. For a state by state guide to recommending cannabis visit ASA’s state by state recommending cannabis guide.

Many states and localities have created regulations to govern the location, size, taxation and even the ownership and management structures of these businesses and non-profits. While these regulations are important in integrating these businesses into the local landscape they do not, for the most part address the safety of the product being sold or the distribution model providing patient access.

ASA has created PFC to address product and distribution safety in the medical cannabis industry. The program promotes the adoption of safe and reasonable industry standards and regulations that oversees medical cannabis products from seed to consumption.

With thousands of options to choose from, patients have questions when it comes to the quality of their medicine. To help your patients choose their medicine with confidence, recommend that they look for PFC Verified products. The PFC seal provides peace of mind that products successfully meet the program’s strict criteria— standards of quality, purity, potency, performance and consistency. For more information about the PFC standards visit the standards section of this website or download the PFC brochure.
